30 Things Before 30

In less than two months I will be celebrating my 29th birthday — for the second time. I was searching the internet one evening for blog post inspiration and came across several "30 Things Before I'm 30" posts that caught my attention. But seeing as how there's less than two months before the big day, I knew there wasn't enough time to make a list that I could actually complete. To be honest, I thought about making a list months ago, but in my usual procrastinating fashion, I pushed the thought to the side and now here we are. And while I'm being completely transparent, the idea of turning 30 has not been sitting well with me. Maybe that's why I put off making a list. Lately I've felt a roller coaster of emotions, which may sound silly, but it's the truth. If I hear someone say "age is just a number" one more time, I may scream. Decade birthdays make you stop and think. They make you stop and think about where you are in life, about where you've been and about where you still would like to go.

Of course there is a long list of things in life that I've yet to do and hope to get to one day.
Maybe I will write a post one day about a life list and continually add to and check things off. In the meantime, instead of throwing a pity party, I decided to take a different approach and celebrate what I've already done. Instead of creating another to-do list that will probably fall by the wayside, I wanted to take a minute and create a list that reflects on the things that have made me the person I am today. A list that abbreviates some of my accomplishments and milestones, both big and small that I cherish as a 29 year-old, and the memorable moments I will take with me into my thirties. Because after all, age is just a number and memories last a lifetime.

30 I've done before 30 (not in chronological order):

  1. Married my best friend
  2. Traveled to Thailand
  3. Joined a sorority
  4. Bought my own car
  5. Became a homeowner
  6. Quit a job I hated
  7. Got promoted to a job I've always wanted
  8. Dipped my toes in the Pacific Ocean
  9. Started a blog
  10. Moved to Charleston
  11. Got baptized
  12. Committed to being fit
  13. Graduated from college with a degree in Management
  14. Rode elephants in the jungle
  15. Performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
  16. Hosted a few great theme parties
  17. Swam with dolphins
  18. Ended an undeserving friendship and began a few new ones
  19. Opened a savings account for traveling
  20. Made it to the top of the Eiffel Tower (I'm afraid of heights)
  21. Went ice skating in Rockefeller Center
  22. Sang the national anthem at a football game (No, I can't sing, and no I wasn't solo)
  23. Climbed to the top of a mountain
  24. Learned how to drive a stick shift
  25. Was on a reality TV show (The Week the Women Went)
  26. Sat in on a surgical procedure and watched without fainting (the first time I did this, I passed out)
  27. Gave a speech at my best friends wedding (I'm terrified of public speaking)
  28. Planned a dinner party for ten people
  29. Caught a fish big enough to provide dinner for two
  30. Planned the wedding of my dreams
  31. Learned Spanish (but forgot most of it)

I'm so very thankful for the opportunities and blessings in my life, both past and present. I'm looking forward to the future and what my thirties will bring!
