Mad Men Theme Party: A Birthday Celebration

We had such a great time celebrating my husband's 30th Birthday this past weekend!  When he decided that he wanted to celebrate with a party at our home, I knew I wanted to make it extra special. He is a huge fan of the AMC show Mad Men, so I thought it would be fun to host a theme party. I'm big on details when it comes to party planning, so I made sure to do a lot of research beforehand. The only thing I wish I had done differently was hire a professional photographer to capture the evening. Either way, we had such a great time and I was very pleased with the way everything turned out. If you're looking to host a Mad Men Theme party, I've got you covered. Below are a few photos and details from the evening.

I created this invite from some images I found online and opted to use the power of social media to invite everyone via Facebook.

One of my husband's favorite cocktails is a Manhattan. Given the show is heavily centered around fancy cocktails and smoking, I decided to set up a "make your own Manhattan" bar.

I focused mainly on finger foods for the party. Based on my research, this was typical for that era. My mother was gracious enough to make the hors d'oeuvres and my mother in-law cooked a big pot of chili with a side of broccoli cornbread.  We used vintage serving pieces for all of the food. Fortunately for me, my mother is a caterer and also happens to own an antique store, making this part of the party planning a breeze.

Mad Men Menu:
Deviled Eggs
Shrimp Rolls
Pulled Pork Sliders
Pineapple, Bacon and Cheese Dip
Chicken and Veggie Kabobs
Mini Tomato Pie Bites
Stuffed Jalapenos
Chili
Broccoli Cornbread
And of course there was cake!  I was so pleased with the way it turned out. It was almost too pretty to eat! I wish I could take credit for it, but I can't. Cora's Soul Food Catering, out of Beaufort, SC baked this beauty.
Me and the Birthday boy!
I was so happy that everyone dressed the part. I stressed out about my outfit for a few weeks, until I had the bright idea of searching on Amazon. I wish I had thought of it earlier. I found my dress and under skirt on Amazon for under $30, and with the power of Prime, had it in two days!
Between the outfits, vintage decor, food and music, we transformed the evening into one out of the 1950's.
My father-in-law and his sons...they fit the part well.
The candy cigarettes were thoroughly enjoyed!
The guys spent most of their time outside on the deck enjoying the smoking area I set up.
With the input of a friend, I ordered cigars for the guys to enjoy for the evening.
I found these fun character cut outs online, which made for some funny photos. They were originally intended for the DIY photo booth I set up outside, but that didn't quite go as planned. We still made good use of them.
There was a lot of moaning and groaning from the men when I suggested we take this photo, but I'm so glad we did.
A huge thanks to all of our family and friends that came out to celebrate!
Happy Birthday Whit!
